Between Duke missing the NCAA Tournament, Wake Forest struggling to 6-16 record and North Carolina earning just a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, it’s been a rough year for the major college basketball programs in North Carolina. NC State could be mentioned in that category as well after the Wolfpack missed the NCAA Tournament.
But NC State closed the regular season strong and kept that momentum going in the first round of the NIT on Thursday night, although it came at the expense of an in-state foe as the Wolfpack knocked off Davidson 75-61 to advance to the quarterfinal round.
The NC State-Davidson clash was one of two NIT first round games on Thursday as Boise State knocked off SMU 85-84 in the other. The full slate of quarterfinal games won’t be set until Saturday, when the final two first round games are played.
Though a handful of teams opted out of consideration, the NIT still managed to assemble a solid 16-team field. The top four seeds — Colorado State, Memphis, Saint Louis and Ole Miss — were all teams with compelling cases for at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament that were left out of the field of 68.
